AŞ is a music album, a narrative interactive web experience, and a performance by TATAR KYZ:LAR, marking their debut album release.

At the heart of the project lies the aş ritual, an old Tatar tradition where family and friends gather to honour their ancestors, share meals, and exchange gifts during life events such as deaths, births, and other significant moments.

The Berlin-based music project TATAR KYZ:LAR reimagines the AŞ ritual as a virtual ceremony— a narrative gaming web experience — and a music album, to reinvent their Tatar identities and reclaim their culture and language — being erased through russification — while integrating it with their immigrant and queer experiences.

TATAR KYZ:LAR is a punk electronic music and poetry performative project by allapopp and Dinara Rasuleva, that merges decolonial and queer-feminist perspectives to explore the experience of reclaiming and reimagining identity after the loss of native culture and language.

AŞ invites participants to dive into the estranged depths of Tatar souls, exploring childhood memories and reflections on fragmented cultural identities. The narration of AŞ is inspired by the poetry series Lostlingual by Dinara Rasuleva. Musical production by allapopp features the Virtual Tatar Choir — an AI instrument trained with manually collected recordings of rural Tatar voices and choirs, and includes collaborations with musicians Aigel Gaisina and Sveta Ben.

The virtual AŞ ceremony is available on HAU4.de as an interactive web experience and released as a music album via the Kota Tones label as a cassette, zine with lyrics and on all streaming platforms. AŞ will be presented as a live concert-performance at HAU1 on the 28.3.25 as part of the festival “Every Day - Feminist Struggles in Post-Socialist Europe”.

AŞ is the debut music album by TATAR KYZ:LAR with the sound created by allapopp and ****lyrics by Dinara Rasuleva.

Released with Kota Tones label, on all streaming platforms and as a cassette with a zine that provides a contextual dive into the themes and lyrics of each song. AŞ is designed by German visual artist Teresa Schönherr, providing a new layer of intercultural conversation.

Listeners are invited on a journey through childhood memories and futuristic visions – with translingual songs in Tatar, English, German, Belarusian and russian, which reflects the immigrant background of the artists and their path to reclaim their languages and cultures.
